2019 PROGRAMS

Registration for 2019 Adirondack Mountain sections closes January 15!

Registration for the White Mountain section closes February 15.

Course Prerequisites

Registrants for all program sections MUST download and read the Student Handbook and appropriate gear list for your program.  There will be thorough gear check at the start of each section and those without the required gear may not be allowed to participate.

  1. Register for your program and make payment online through the ADK using the links provided in the program descriptions below.  Registration for Adirondack Mountain sections closes January 15, the White Mountain section closes February 15.

  2. Complete the online student application available HERE.

  3. Complete the online medical form available HERE.

  4. Complete the online liability form available HERE.

  5. If you don't have an Adirondack Mountain Club membership please go to www.adk.org to obtain one.  Bring your membership card with you to Winter School.

NEW HAMPSHIRE WHITE MOUNTAINS WEEKEND DAY HIKE

New this year! This section will be run out of the AMC Highland Center Lodge located in Crawford Notch.  Similar to our ADK dayhike program, this section begins with registration and gear check-in between 9:00 AM and noon on Thursday, March 1st and ends early afternoon on Sunday, March 4th. It features workshops and instruction relevant to extreme weather conditions found only in the White Mountains Thursday through Sunday, a moderate hike on Friday, and a full-day 4,000'+ hike on Saturday.

ADK WEEKEND DAY HIKE

This section begins with registration and gear check-in between 9:00 AM and noon on Thursday, January 25th and ends early afternoon on Sunday, January 28th. It features workshops and instruction Thursday through Sunday, a moderate hike on Friday, and a full-day 4,000'+ hike on Saturday.

ADK WEEKEND BACKPACK
 

This section begins with registration and gear check-in between 9:00 AM and noon on Thursday, January 25th and ends early afternoon on Sunday, January 28th. It features workshops and instruction on Thursday, followed by a Friday to Sunday backpack into remote area with an attempted 4,000'+ climb on Saturday.

ADK WEEKLONG COMBINATION DAY HIKE/BACKPACK ("COMBO")

 

This section includes all the activities of the weekend day hike section, followed by a backpack from Sunday to Wednesday into a remote area for additional 4000’+ ascents and instruction. This Section is a great value, giving participants a chance to learn a variety of skills from all of our instructors during the weekend, followed by a fantastic backpack trip into the High Peaks. The weeklong combination program begins with registration and gear check between 9:00 AM and noon on Thursday, January 25th and ends around noon on Wednesday, January 31st.

ADK ADVANCED BACKPACK  SECTION FULL

 

We don't run this section every year, but will in 2018.  This is a five night wilderness leadership training program intended to prepare you to plan and execute demanding trips into the backcountry in winter. The course will include a five night backpack into the High Peaks Wilderness and students can expect to participate in trip planning, navigation, critical thinking and decision making. Participating students are expected to read additional materials and propose trip plans in advance of the start date. A prerequisite for this course is prior participation in our weekend backpack or combination backpack section, or an equivalent course. Only a limited number of students will be accepted into this program. Contact wmsadk+programinfo@gmail.com to discuss your interest and  include "WMS Advanced Backpack" in the subject. The advanced backpack section will start between 9:00 AM and noon on Thursday, January 25th and ends around noon on Wednesday, January 31st.

Additional Fees

  • Program fees include all meals while at basecamp and bunkroom lodging with shared bathrooms.

  • Participants are responsible for their own food during backpacking trips and trail food during dayhikes.

  • For the Adirondack sections, an additional $8.00 fee will be required (bring with you to the program) which is charged by ORDA for the McKenzie-Intervale   Olympic ski jump facility, which is the location utilized by the School for ice axe, self-arrest, and crampon training

  • Note that ADK membership is required to participate in the program - you can join when registering if you are not yet a member.
